The
RipOff Report has been following the
fund-raising efforts of the Red Cross
and other philanthropic organizations.
Our concerns were that some were getting
rich over the misfortune of others.
The following letter was sent to Dr.
Bernadine Healy, Chief Executive Officer
of the Red Cross, via e-mail:
------------------------Letter----------------------
From: RipOff Report
Date: Thursday, September 20, 2001 11:52
PM
To: Dr. Bernadine Healy
Subject: Press: Request for Information
Dear Dr. Healy:
I am an investigative reporter for
RipoffReport.com, a web-based news
agency and I am doing a story on the
American Red Cross. There are some
substantiated indications of unfair
profit-taking surrounding the disasters
in New York, Washington, DC (Alexandria,
VA), and Pennsylvania.
We would like you to disclose how much
income the American Red Cross has
obtained since September 11, 2001 and
how you intend on distributing those
profits. Secondarily, are you going to
make it possible for individuals to
donate blood directly to specific
recipients without cost to them or their
insurance companies. I am
Very Sincerely,
Danny Scalf
Investigative Reporter/Consumer Advocate

Letter-------------------
Our bloodhounding of the Red Cross bore
fruit today. They finally decided, after
only nine days, to release some of those
profits to those who truly deserve them.
Today, September 29, 2001, the following
Associated Press released this
announcement:
----------------------------Copy-----------------------
Red Cross to give grants to families of
terror victims
WASHINGTON (AP) — The Red Cross will
give grants of up to $30,000 to families
of people who died or are missing in the
attacks on the World Trade Center and
the Pentagon. The first tax-free
payments were sent to families Friday
and are meant to assist with short-term
expenses such as mortgage or rent
payments and funeral costs.
-------------------------End of
Copy---------------------
We recognize the American Red Cross for
responding to partial release of
profits, although they never disclosed
how much they have taken in to date
since 9/11/01. We still want to know,
and will insist on full and immediate
disclosure. We emphasize that we
Americans have contributed those monies
for the benefit of the families of the
victims and not to fortify Red Cross
operations.
Sincerely,
The RipOff Report

Red Cross
SCAM ousts CEO, Dr. Bernadine Healy.
Charity Rip-off continues |

|
The
Rip-off Report placed a great deal of
pressure on Dr. Bernadine Healy, CEO,
American Red Cross, to account for the
fund collected for the victims of the
tragedy of 9/11/01. She recognized the
sense in our demands and attempted to
comply.
As a result of a vote of "No
Confidence," last Friday, Dr. Healy was
removed from her post for her
formulation of the Liberty Fund, that
segregates funds collected from the
tragedy. Dr. Healy emphasized that she
was determined these funds would not be
commingled. However, she will remain in
her position until the end of the year.
The fate of the $547 million Liberty
Fund, which was instituted by Dr. Healy
for accountability purposes, is dubious.
It is likely the interim president,
Harold Decker, will capitulate to the
"lumped funds" concept demanded by the
majority of the American Red Cross'
executives, which means that
accountability less likely, the promise
of financial aid to the victims of
9/11/01 will likely be broken, and the
largest charity will be a fat cat. We're
watching you, Harold. You better make
this charity more charitable!
